Khaleda, 67, cuts as many pounds cake

Dhaka, Aug 15 (bdnews24.com) – The BNP chairperson has celebrated her birthday by cutting four cakes weighing 67 pound in the wee hours of Monday, the National Mourning Day, observed to mark the assassination of Liberation War hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

At an unofficial programme, the 67th birth anniversary of the two-time prime minister saw senior party leaders flocking her Gulshan office – the venue.

Hundreds of supporters of the affiliated organisations also turned up to greet their leader with flowers. They also chanted slogans for her.

Born to Eskander Majumder and Toiyba Majumder in 1945 at Feni’s Sonagaji, nick-named Putul, Khaleda spent her childhood in Dinajpur.

The BNP chairperson has been observing the day since 1991, when she became prime minister for the first time.

However, there are confusions with regard to her actual birthday, leading to protests from various quarters not to celebrate the day on August 15.

According to her marriage certificate, she was born on Sept 5, 1945 while in her first passport it is Aug 19, 1946. But she gave the date as Aug 9, 1944 for registration for the matriculation examination.

A case is going on in the High Court challenging her celebration of birthday on Aug 15. A lawyer ‘Suhrawardy’ filed the case on Aug 20, 1997. Khaleda in 1999 filed a civil revision case seeking its cancellation.
