Baby survives landslide in Bangladesh

A baby girl was pulled from the rubble unharmed Sunday after a landslide destroyed her family’s home in southern Bangladesh, killing her parents and two older siblings, an official said.

Rescuers found the three-month-old infant in the family’s destroyed mud and straw hut in Teknaf district, about 235 miles south of the capital, Dhaka, said Shubal Das, an official at the local administrator’s office in nearby Cox’s Bazar town.

The hut was leveled after a chunk of earth loosened by heavy monsoon rains rolled down from a hill Sunday, he said.

Laborer Nurul Hashem, 30, his wife and two children ages 7 and 3 died at the scene, said Shajjadul Hassan, a local government official.

The baby was being looked after by a neighbor, Hassan said.
