Celebration of Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day (21 February 2010)

Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra

Invitation

Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra in collaboration with Bangladesh Australia Association Canberra Inc (BAAC) will celebrate the Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2010.

The Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day represents the heroic sacrifice made by the people of Bangladesh on 21 February, 1952 to establish the rights of their mother tongue-Bangla. The sacrifice on that day created a sense of national identity, which culminated in the struggle for establishment of Bangladesh as an independent nation in 1971. The resilient people of Bangladesh regard the mother language as a fundamental component of their human rights and as a source of inspiration for the evolution of a modern, peaceful and dynamic Bangladesh. By the same vein, Bangladesh also continued to value the rights of the peoples around the world to their mother languages. In 1999, Bangladesh was at the forefront in the initiative to obtain international recognition for the great sacrifice made by the martyrs of the language movement of 1952. Finally, the UNESCO in October 1999 unanimously adopted a resolution to declare 21 February as the International Mother Language Day which recognised, among other things, the rights of all people to their mother languages.

On this auspicious occasion following programmes have been organised at the premises of the High Commission at 43, Culgoa Circuit, O’Malley, Canberra:

4 pm A discussion meeting on the significance of the day-organised by the High Commission
5 pm Cultural Presentation organised by Bangladesh Australia Association Canberra Inc.

The High Commission would like to extend all a warm invitation to join us in the discussion meeting and the cultural presentation. We look forward to seeing you during the celebration.
