Bangladeshi Community Leaders mets the Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs

Sydney 13 June 2013: Australian Bangladeshi Community is deeply concerned about ongoing violent activities and atrocities committed by the anti-liberation forces linked to the verdicts of the trials of war criminals and crimes against humanity and the recent upsurge of radical forces in Bangladesh which is pushing the country back into the medieval era. Considering the gravity of the ongoing situation, today, a group of Bangladeshi Community Leaders living in Sydney including, Prabir Maitra, Selima Begum, Abdul Jalil, Shirajul Haque, Samir Sarkar and Abu Tariq met Senator the Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs at his Sydney office at 70 Phillip St, Sydney. The attending leaders presented the details about the trials of war criminals and crimes against humanity committed in 1971 during the liberation movement of Bangladesh. They also discussed the recent rise of radical forces and the atrocities against the religious minorities including killing innocent people, burning houses and temples of minorities, burning public buses, trains, and destroying infrastructures by the supporters and activists of war criminals, who aim to hinder the proceedings of the war tribunals. Thirteen point demands of Hefazat-e-Islam and how itís potentially pushing the Bangladeshi society into the dark era was also discussed in the meeting.
The leaderships seek full support of the Australian Government for Bangladesh in
1) Completing the trials of war criminals and crimes against humanity,
2) Creating international pressures on parties supporting the radicalism,
3) Supporting the government to contain the terrorists,
4) Preventing the people spreading propaganda in Australian soil of human rights violation by the government of Bangladesh, and
5) Extending technological, logistic and political support to contempt radical anarchism and restore democracy in Bangladesh.
Senator Carr assured the leaders that the High Commission of Australia in Dhaka would be advised to focus on protection of minorities and prevent rise of religious extremism in Bangladesh. The minister also reiterated that he would further follow up the matters and keep close look on its ongoing development.
