Observance of the Victory Day
Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra organised day long programme to celebrate the Victory Day of Bangladesh in a befitting manner. The National Flag was hoisted by H. E. Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury, High Commissioner for Bangladesh to Australia at the Chancery on 16 December 2010 in the morning. All members of the Mission and some members of Bangladesh community in Canberra were present at the Flag hoisting ceremony.
In the afternoon, a discussion meeting on the significance of the Victory Day was held at the Conference Room of the Mission presided over by H.E. the High Commissioner. At the beginning of the meeting, a special prayer was offered for the salvation and peace of the souls of the martyrs of our War of Liberation. After that the messages given for the Victory Day from Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Foreign Minister of Bangladesh were read out. In the discussion meeting, many members of the expatriate Bangladesh community including President of the Bangladesh Australia Association Canberra Inc. Dr. Mohammad A Quadir took part. The speakers paid their tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and highlighted his legendary leadership in the Historic War of Liberation. They also praised the statesmanship of Bangabandhu for his dedication for the development and well being of the country and its people. The speakers also paid great respect to the four national leaders, three million martyrs, all the freedom fighters, and all those who underwent sufferings in different forms for achieving the Independent Bangladesh through Victory in our War of Liberation. Above all, the speakers also paid great homage to W. A. S. Ouderland, Bir Pratik, for his contribution to our War of Liberation. Most of the speakers highlighted that we have many things to be proud off but we could have achieved more if we were united. They also acknowledged that we could not fulfil the dreams of our freedom fighters after so many years of our Independence.
In the concluding address H.E. the High Commissioner Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, three million martyrs, all the freedom fighters and Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Forces during our Liberation War General M A G Osmani for their contribution towards achieving Victory of Bangladesh in 1971. He praised Bangabandhu as the unmatched leader of the Nation in its thousand year history. He also praised the heroism of freedom fighters, who defeated one of the strongest military forces in 1971 and snatched Victory against the regular Army. He also expressed his deep appreciation for the expatriate community for their invaluable contribution to the socio-economic development of Independent Bangladesh. But, he also urged them to do more to accelerate the socio-economic developments of our beloved motherland.
After the discussion program still photographic presentation highlighting the events of our struggle for freedom and ultimate Victory was displayed. The Victory Day celebration concluded with a magnificent cultural presentation.
