BEN, Australia Fund Rasing 2010
Dear BEN members and friends
This is to invite you to participate in the BEN fundraising for 2010.
As you know, BEN is working tirelessly, through its partner organization in Bangladesh, namely Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), to protect Bangladesh environment. As a result of this work, several significant achievements have been made, including (i) introduction of unleaded gasoline, (ii) removal of two-stroke engine vehicles, (iii) ban on use of polythene bags, (iv) removal of river encroaching structures, (v) adoption of law for protection of wetlands, (vi) adoption of building codes allowing for more open space, etc.
The work of BAPA and BEN is receiving recognition. This year the government of Bangladesh awarded BAPA the “Jatiyo Poribesh Padak 2010” in recognition of its work in environment education and awareness building. Earlier the Dhaka City Corporation awared BAPA the “Nagar Padak 2007” for its work in protecting Dhaka City’s environment.
Both BEN and BAPA are self reliant organizations, not depending for funding on either the government or foreign donor agencies. Instead they depend entirely on contribution and voluntary labor of members and their supporters and sympathizers. Accordingly, each year BEN conducts an annual fundraising to collect contributions. BEN’s overhead costs are borne by BEN organizers directly, so that the entire fund raised is sent to Bangladesh to support BAPA and other pro-environment activities. BEN’s financial support is an important reason why BAPA is able to function as an organization independent of the government and foreign donor agencies. As a result of this financial independence, BAPA can take objective view of environmental problems and their proposed solutions and is not influenced by vested interests.
This financial independence and selfless voluntary work have helped BAPA and BEN have earned the respect of Bangladesh people.
So please come forward to help preserve the independence of BAPA and BEN by taking part in BEN’s 2010 annual fundraising. Many of you have participated in previous years’ fundraisings, and we are grateful for your support. Many others may join this effort for the first time.
BEN’s budget is modest and its accounts are transparent. Please visit BEN website (http://www.BEN-Global.org ) for the details. Contributions to BEN range from $20 to $5,000. So, no amount is small, and participation is important.
