Hon. Chief Justice of Australia hails the ongoing judicial reform measures in Bangladesh
The Hon. Chief Justice of Australia Justice Gleeson hails the ongoing reform measures taken by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh after the independence of judiciary in November 2007. This was mentioned in a meeting with the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh Justice Mr. Md. Ruhul Amin who met Chief Justice Hon. Gleeson at the High Court of Australia in Canberra 05 February 2008 where four other Judges of the High Court Bench of Australia were also present. The High Court of Australia has seven member bench including the Chief Justice.
Hon. Justice Gleeson also expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as a common affinity under the Commonwealth. He also hoped that the visit would provide the Hon. Chief Justice and his members of the delegation an opportunity to acquire experiences from the learned judges of the High Court of Australia as well as from the judges of the Supreme Court of New South Wales during their meetings in Sydney from 6-8 February 2008.
The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh reciprocated the same sentiments and expressed his gratefulness to the Hon. Chief Justice of Australia to meet him and the members of his entourage despite a busy schedule. He also hoped that the visit would be helpful in understanding the judicial system of Australia which is similar to the judicial system of Bangladesh as both nations are the members of the Commonwealth. Hon’ble Chief Justice Mr. Ruhul Amin mentioned about the huge backlog of trial cases in Bangladesh and he sought the assistance in streamlining the pending cases with their experiences. He invited the Chief Justice of Australia to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.
In the meeting from the Bangladesh side Hon’ble Md. Abdul Wahhab Miah, Judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, Mr. Ikteder Ahmed, Regsitrar, Bangladesh Supreme Court, Mr. Syed Aminul Islam, Project Director (Joint Secretary), Legal and Judicial Capacity Building Project, Mr. Md. Shawkat Hossain, District and Session Judge, Comilla, Mr. AQM Mostafa, Special Officer of the Supreme Court and Md. Restadul Islam, Acting High Commissioner, Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra were present.
Later in the evening, in honour of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh, a dinner was hosted by the Acting High Commissioner at the Bangladesh House where Justice Michael Kirby, one of the judges of the High Court of Australia was also present. Justice Kirby, who takes lot of interest about Bangladesh, hoped to visit Bangladesh soon.
The Chief Justice of Bangladesh is now visiting Australia to have an insight from the Australian judicial system to impart necessary elements in the judicial system of Bangladesh. The Hon. Chief Justice of Bangladesh will be meeting the Chief Justice of Supreme Court of NSW Hon. James Jacob Spigelman, AC on 06 February 2008 in Sydney.
