On this occasion we will celebrate the life of the legendary Bengali poet and the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

Saturday 21st May 2011 1 pm to 5.30 pm International Scholars speak about Tagore’s life, intellectual inspiration and extraordinarily creative work: Professors Anisuzzaman (Bangladesh), Soumyendra Nath Mukherjee (University of Sydney), Syed Manzoorul Islam (Bangladesh) and Dr. Peter G. Friedlander (La Trobe University).
Sunday 22nd May 2011 3pm to 6pm Melbourne will be privileged to hear the famous Rabindra Sangeet Music group led by Ms. Pramita Mallick: Subrata Mukherjee (keyboard), Siddharth Bhattacharjee (percussionist), Surajit Roy (Esraj player). The concert ‘Tagore – Beyond Frontier’ explores the variety,vastness of Rabindrasangeet and the various different influnences on Tagore’s compositions.

MAI Rabindranath Tagore Conference
150th Birth Anniversary of Bengali Poet Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Laureate
On 21st and 22nd May, 2011, the MAI will be celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore — a legendary Bengali poet and the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. We have invited prominent Tagore experts, scholars, cultural personalities and artists from all over the world to participate. Our celebration is aimed at enhancing our understanding of the contribution of Tagore to socio-politico-economic and cultural studies. With this initiative we also hope to introduce Tagore to a large audience in Australia and abroad.
The 2-day event consists of a one full-day conference and cultural evening on Saturday 21st May and a cultural evening and screening of a documentary on Sunday 22nd May. In addition to informing the Australian public about the work and ideas of Tagore, we intend to publish a high quality academic book based on the papers at the conference.
Call for Papers
We intend to cover the following themes at the conference:
• Philosophy of Tagore
• Literary thought of Tagore
• World view of Tagore / Tagore and International Affairs
• Tagore and peace studies / world peace
The conference aims to explore the range of Tagore’s ideas by bringing together interdisciplinary articles that evaluate the relevance of Tagore’s literature and ideas in the context of 21st-century Asia.
Abstracts (250 words) are invited from scholars engaged in any of the above studies on Tagore. This abstract should be submitted with a title and a short biography of the author(s). Abstracts are due by 30th April, 2011 and the final paper should be emailed by 30th June, 2011. The preferred method of referencing is the Harvard (author/date) system and the word length should ideally be between 3000–7500 words. Scholars need to use PowerPoint for presenting at the conference on Saturday 21st May, 2011.
