Press Release: Fund Raising Dinner for Laurie Ferguson MP

Sydney 1st September 2013:

Australian Federal Election will be held on September 7, 2013. Australian parliament has 150 seats in the Australian House of Representatives and 40 seats in the Australian Senate.

Australian Bangladeshi Community has organised a fundraising dinner on Sunday, 1st September at 7 PM. The dinner was held at Minto Community Centre, Minto, NSW 2566. Bangladeshi community members and guests participated in the dinner at a cost of $30 per person. The fund was raised for Mr. Laurie Ferguson, Candidate for House of Representatives for Werriwa Electorate, from Australian Labor Party. Senator Lisa Singh was guest speaker in this program. Also, Dr Andrew Dominic McDonald, Former Member of Macquarie Fields, Shadow Minister for Health, and Shadow Minister for Medical Research in New South Wales was present at that dinner to support Mr. Laurie.

Werriwa is located in south-western Sydney suburban electorate where 42% people born outside Australia and most of migrants Bangladeshi voters live in this electrode. In Werriwa 54.4% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Arabic 6.4%, Hindi 4.2%, Spanish 2.3%, Italian 2.0% and Samoan 1.8% and so on. Religiously 9.8% Muslims, 5.2 % Hindus lives here too.

Warriwa was a Labor safe seat for long time. Australian 21st Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was Member of Parliament in this electrode (1952-1978). Mr. Laurie Ferguson Laurie was elected to Federal Parliament in 1990 and moved to electorate Werriwa in 2010. He is a very close friend with Bangladesh community and always raises his voice to help our community.

Mr. Laurie expressed gratitude to the Bangladeshi community for their continuous support for him.
