A statement issued by the office of his Eminence the Mufti of Australia
Professor Doctor Ibrahim Abu Mohammed
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, blessings and peace to all previous Prophets and Messengers, and our master, Muhammad, the last Prophet and Messenger;
1. The Federal Council of Imams, including the Council of Ifta (Islamic ruling) have been lately keen to verify the sighting of the crescent with the beginning of every Arabic (Lunar) month through organized committees linked to each other throughout all Australian states, and in most of the places appropriate for sighting. The Council of Ifta benefits from the information provided by astronomical computations and astronomical observatories in Australia and overseas, thus confirming and following the tradition of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) concerning verifying the sighting of the crescent. The Council announces the confirmed sighting to the people through Quran Kareem Radio and other Australian media, as well as available communication means.
2. This process will, God willing, continue with the beginning of every Arabic month throughout the year, so that people will be aware of the days of Allah, in obedience and submission to the commands of Allah, with the exemption of the month of Dhul Hijjah. This exemption is because running the affairs in this respect is for the country where the rituals of Hajj, including circumambulation, active walking, and staying in Arafat are performed; i.e. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, may Allah preserve it. This is fulfilling what Allah said: “They ask you concerning the New Moons. Say: They are but signs to mark fixed periods of time in (the affairs of) men, and for Pilgrimage” [Albaqarah 2:189]

The Mufti of Australia takes this opportunity to express his congratulations to all the Australian people in general and to the Muslim and Arabic community in particular.
