Bangladesh Speaker Abdul Hamid MP appealed to non resident Bangladeshis (NRB) to invest in Bangladesh, which is expanding and accelerating social protection programs ensuring job opportunities for all households in Bangladesh by 2021. On 23 February 2010, a Bangladesh parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker attended in an informal discussion with NRB in Canberra where he said, in reply to a question from the audience, that his government is committed to eradicate poverty completely from Bangladesh through creating manpower with technical educations, improvement of transport systems and supply of electricity to every households in the country by 2021.
As a host of this discussion event, Dr Parag Das and Mrs Urmila Das welcomed the Speaker who was accompanied by HE High Commissioner for Bangladesh LTGEN Masud Uddin Chowdhury, Parliament Whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury (Liton), Atiur Rahman Atiq, ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP, Afzal Hussain MP, ABM Ashrafuddin (Nizam) MP, Zillul Hakim and other dignitaries.
In response to a question on Myanmar-Bangladesh-India (MBI) gas pipeline project, the Speaker said Bangladesh, by agreeing MBI project, is getting access to the market in Nepal and Bhutan through Indian territories, while India is getting access to Myanmar through Bangladesh territories- it’s a ‘win-win’ situation. By giving examples of the advancement of Germany, France, Italy and Spain in European Union he added that Bangladesh economy will be benefited from Bangladesh-India cooperation.
The discussion was attended by Dr Dalia Nilufar, Dr Asif Rahman, Dr Moyazur Rahman, Dr Ezaz Al Mamun, Mrs Swapna Banu, Mr Kamal Ahmed, Mr Md Sirajul Haque, Mr Safa Tareq, Mr Munir Rahman, Mrs Ivy Rahman, Mrs Sima Kar, Mr Robin Guda and Mr Mahbub Sumon and Dr Ajoy Kar. Some NRBs from Sydney also participated in the lively discussion which was followed by dinner.
The speaker and MPs have attended the parliamentary sessions in Canberra and Sydney to become familiar with Australian parliamentary system. The Australian Parliament House and UNDP jointly funded the delegation.
