Release on the Visit of Hon'ble State Minister for Housing and Public Works

Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, MP, Hon’ble State Minister for Housing and Public Works, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh met with Hon Tanya Plibersek, MP, Minister for Housing, Commonwealth of Australia on 27 May 2010 in Canberra and had discussion on issues of mutual interests particularly related to urban and city planning as well as development and housing issues. Hon’ble State Minister for Housing and Public Works of Bangladesh visited Australia from 25 – 28 May 2010 with a delegation comprising senior officials of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Chittagong Development Authority. H.E. the High Commissioner Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury also accompanied the Hon’ble State Minister in the meeting.

Hon’ble State Minister also met with Hon Laurie Ferguson, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services on 27 May 2010. Mr. Fergusion briefed the Hon’ble State Minister about the activities of his department. Hon’ble State Minister appreciated Mr. Fergusion for his role for upholding democracy in Bangladesh. Later on that day, Hon’ble State Minister along with his delegation also visited to “Bonner” to see an ongoing housing development project in Canberra.

Earlier, Hon’ble State Minister arrived Sydney on 25th May 2010 and had meeting with the officials of the office of the Chief Executive of Housing New South Wales. Later on the same day the Hon’ble State Minister along with the members of his delegation attended a civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Parramatta City Council. H.E. the High Commissioner for Bangladesh also attended the civic reception. The Parramatta City Council apprised the Hon’ble State Minister about the city planning. Hon’ble State Minister also met with Mr. Sam Haddad, Director General, Department of Planning, NSW on 26th May 2010. Mr. Haddad briefed the Hon’ble State Minister about the challenges to meet the increasing demand for housing with the growth of population in Sydney City Area. The Department of Planning also made a power point presentation on housing management in Sydney City Area.

During the visit, Hon’ble State Minister also met with the ACT Minister for Planning Mr. Andrew Barr, MLA on 28th May 2010. The ACT Minister briefed the Hon’ble State Minister of Bangladesh on the city planning of ACT, particularly on the expansion of the city area on the basis of zoning system in different suburbs. Hon’ble State Minister met with Mr. Neil Savery, Chief Planning Executive, ACT Planning and Land Authority and also Chief Executive, ACT Territory and Municipal Services later on the same day. They briefed the Hon’ble State Minister and his delegation about the role of their departments for managing Canberra’s future growth as they advise Government on land, planning and building policy. Later on the same day Hon’ble State Minister had a meeting with Mr. John Robertson, CEO of the Land Development Agency and Mr. David Daws, CEO of Land and Property Services (LAPS). Hon’ble State Minister also had an interactive session with the members of Expatriate Bangladesh Community at the High Commission on 27 May 2010. Hon’ble State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, MP left Australia on 29 May 2010.
