In this lecture titled “The Ways of the Sahaabah”, Brother Abul Ehsan’s narrations proceeded to a great length to be able to highlight some of the most moving and inspiring facets of the lives and characters of Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam’s Companions (RA).
Brother Abul Ehsan tried to draw people’s attention to the fact that in the 7th English era, Almightly Allaah, through His Noble Message of the Qur’aan and under the Leadership of Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam, raised a ‘unique generation’ – without any parallel in the entire history of mankind – the generation of the Companions (RA) of Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam. After this, no other generation of this calibre, devotion, loyalty, sincerity and sacrifice was ever again to be found in this world. No one would ever succeed in attaining such sublime status in faith and knowledge as these Companions (RA) of Prophet. SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Brother Abul Ehsan reminded people that – this most admirable and radiant generation was formed out of a collection of history’s most, truthful, honest and noble personalities. It included the most righteous and pious persons amongst men, the most knowledgeable amongst men, the most steadfast amongst men, the most patient amongst men and the most humble amongst men .Some of these Companions also happened to be the most handsome men of their time, the most wealthy men of their time, the most powerful men of their time, the most oppressed and subjugated men of their time.
These Companions (RA)were the persons who, after embracing Islaam, had to endure extreme humiliations, extreme torture, persecutions and atrocities at the hands of the disbelievers of their time and made the greatest amount of sacrifice in the way of Allaah and in defending Allaah’s ‘Deen’ and Allaah’s Messenger. The Comapanions (RA) continued to resist all persecutions and humiliations and persist without any compromise. The major factors behind such unmatched persistence were their unshakable belief in Allaah; their wholehearted love for the Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam; their clear sense of responsibility; their unwavering belief in the Hereafter; and the good tidings of success that they received from Allah.
The Blessed Companions (RA)of Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam were gifted with understanding, wisdom and vast Islaamic knowledge. They discarded the comforts of this world, and gave up the company of its advocates, and in fact, they truly emulated the lives of Allaah’s Prophets and Messengers. To their wisdom and perception, material comfort was a burden that they had to constantly unload. The journey of this life bewildered them. Seldom did they sleep, so little did they eat and so much sacrifices did they make to defend and uphold Allaah’s Noble and Majestic ‘Deen’- ‘Al-Islaam’.
The Noble Companions (RA) deserves our utmost respect. As for the discord which occurred among them, it is to be considered as the consequence of the sincere exercise of personal conviction and opinion. The discord was resolved and is a thing of the past. It is not permissible for us to hold, on the basis of past differences among the Companions (RA), any grudges and ill will It is not lawful for anyone to make any accusation against them or cast suspicion upon them, and there is no benefit to be derived there from. The Companions (RA) are those whom Allaah Has described in the best of terms. He has praised them upon many occasions.
“And those who believed and emigrated and struggled in the way of ALLAH, and those who gave shelter and helped, they are the Believers in truth; for them shall be forgiveness and generous provision”. (Al-Anfaal, 8:74 ).
“And the Foremost, the First among the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in a good way, ALLAH is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens underneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever and ever; that is the mighty triumph”. (At-Tawbah, 9:100 ).
“It is for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their possessions, seeking bounty and good pleasure from ALLAH, and helping ALLAH and His Messenger; they are the truthful ones. And those who were settled in the city and in Faith before them, love those who emigrated towards them, and they do not find any need in their breasts for what has been given to them, and prefer them above themselves, though poverty be their lot; and whoso is saved from the greed of his soul those are the ones who will prosper”. (Al-Hashr, 59:8-9 ) .
Mankind across the globe and, in particular, all those who are sincerely striving to lead an honest and unpretentious life of piety, dignity and tranquillity, will find their best role models, in the most truthful, self-sacrificing and honourable lives led by this most noble generation of all times – the Companions of Prophet SallaAllaahu Alaihi Wasallam.
