Abed Chaudhury: Nobo Borsho of the year 2017 is now at our doorstep. As usual in Sydney there will be Baishakhi Mela and also minor Melas of similar sort in all Australian cities including Canberra. Beginning of Baishakh and similar events are very ancient indeed and goes back thousands of years to a time when human population worshipped nature and season and when religion and culture were the same thing. Asian people observe his time as Songkran, Makar Songkranti, literally meaning a confluence of time. In Australia many people of Asian origin live and observe this time in their own ways.

Given that Bangladeshis have taken a prominet role in observing Baishakh and the beginning of this ancient calender it would be a great idea if a new year parade could be organised in our Nations Capital Australia. It could take place on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin or in the parliamentary Circle. Cultural workers aare urged/invited to organise this landmark festival with a song and dance filled parade and in a colourful way from year 2018
